What Foods Bring Radiance and Color to Your Face

One of the most common cliches for describing beautiful young women is to say they have "rosy cheeks."

Red - "ruby" - lips are also a popular feature to give young women.

The history of makeup supports how attractive red cheeks and lips are. Rouge (blush) for cheeks is so common because it exaggerates the look of rosy cheeks. And that's why red is the most popular color for lipstick.

But you don't need imitation rosy cheeks or fake red lips.

You can have your own, naturally.

When your facial skin has good blood circulation, it glows. That's true of everyone.

The red color doesn't mean anything by itself. It's simply a sign of good, healthy blood flow.

Also, higher amounts of blood mean your arteries deliver more nutrition to your cells - and clean up more metabolic waste.

That enhanced blood flow makes your cheeks glow and your lips redder and brighter.

This Simple "Miracle Molecule" Enhances Blood Circulation

When you have plenty of this molecule, your blood vessels relax, growing larger. That allows more blood to flow through, supplying your skin cells with more oxygen.

Without good blood circulation just below the surface, all skin looks dull and drab - unhealthy and, therefore, unattractive.

What "Miracle Molecule" Keeps Your Blood Vessels Relaxed?

Dr. Louis Navarro and two other scientists won the Nobel Prize in 1998 for their discovery.

It's nitric oxide, or just NO - one molecule of nitrogen joined with one molecule of oxygen.

We Can't Take NO for Granted

It's an odorless and colorless gas, so we can't directly detect it.

Our endothelial cells and mucus membrane cells produce NO. However, it's an unstable, short-lived gas. Our bodies can't store it for the future.

Also, our production of NO goes down with time. By age 40, NO production in men has gone down by 50% - and in women by 65%.

We also block production of NO by eating processed food, especially sugar and salt. Excess sugar and salt produce free radicals that destroy the NO-producing cells in your blood vessels.

When You Don't Make Enough NO

When your blood cells don't get enough NO to relax and dilate, allowing for the free flow of blood - they tighten and contract.

That squeezes and constricts your blood, like too much water going through a water hose.

The result: high blood pressure.

That also forces your heart to work harder to pump your blood through your blood vessels, leading to coronary disease.

Therefore, having too little NO is dangerous.

More NO Means You'll Hear Fewer "No's"

Fortunately, there are ways to increase your NO - no matter what your age.

Some foods contain the nitrate precursors that support your body making NO:

* Beets or beet juice

* Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, arugala, bok choy, chard and kale

How You Can Continually Boost Production of NO

This depends on something you do anyway - around the clock. But many of us do it improperly, so we don't get the full NO advantage.

Breathing.

But not just any old breathing - breathing through your nose - your nostrils.

There's a good reason calling someone a "mouth breather" is an insult.

But too many of us forget about our own mouth breathing.

This is especially important for increasing NO in the blood vessels in your face, because nostril breathing increases NO right there, in your nose, your sinuses, your nasal cavities and your upper airways.

Get in the habit of keeping your mouth closed (except when you're talking, of course), and inhaling and exhaling through your nose.

This is true even when you exercise - especially when you exercise, except when you're going all-out in a massive sprint or High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout.

If you walk, run or ride a bike at less than 90% intensity, breathe through your nose. It'll take practice at first, but it increase the amount of health benefits you get from your workout.

And it will make it easier for you to breathe through your nose automatically the rest of the time, even when you're not thinking about it.

Even While You're Sleeping

Buy some skin tape at any drugstore.

Before you go to bed, cut off a snippet about one inch long.

If you kiss someone goodnight, do it now.

Then place the tape from just above your upper lip to just below your lower lip - so your mouth remains closed.

Therefore, you breathe through your nose all night long.

You'll enjoy deeper, more refreshing sleep. You'll have less risk of apnea (when you stop breathing) waking you up.

And you'll have more energy during the day tomorrow.

Hum Along

This sounds weird, but science has found humming increases NO even more than nasal breathing. Humming at a low pitch is most effective.

Unless you have a breathing problem, humming for from one to ten minutes per day is great.

If you have a breathing problem, hum for an hour a day until you're well.

If you get dizzy, scale back.

Supplementation

Some companies have come out with topical creams with precursors to enhance NO production within your skin.

It may help you with acne or the marks left by acne. However, it's EXTREMELY expensive.

You don't need to buy anything. Just eat more greens, breathe through your nose and hum.

Say YES to NO.
